In trying to carrying out manual handling jobs in your work place, whether at construction site, factories, laboratories, in the office, or while making deliveries, you need to be really cautious to avoid hazards that are attached to such activities.
Truth is there could be tendencies of incorrect manual handling, which is one of the most common causes of injuries at work. Risks like the Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) which often develops as a result of heavy manual labour, awkward postures, material handling, and previous or existing injury. All of these account for over a third of all workplace injuries.

What is Manual Handling?

Manual handling, as defined by the Manual Handling Operations Regulations, is any transporting or supporting of a load (including the lifting, putting down, pushing, and pulling, carrying or moving) by hand or by bodily force.
In most workplaces, individuals could be involved in the moving of goods from one position to another.

Though, it may be seen as a job that requires the individual’s strength and agility, but it must be noted that his or her safety in carrying out this activity must be considered. The employer and the employee should have this at the back of their mind. Hence, it is their collective responsibility to put in place what will minimize the risk. That is, manual handling risks have to be assessed and then tackled.

Employer’s roles

Employees have to ensure full safety of their manual handling workers by aligning with the following:

  • Avoid the need for anything that will make manual handling hazardous.
  • Assess the risk of injury from any hazardous manual handling that cannot be avoided. At least, they should be seriously lessened.
  • Reduce the risk of injury from hazardous manual handling, so far as it is reasonably practicable.
Employee’s role

As individuals who are involved in manual handling, there are effective roles you need to take to ensure your safety.
