Only recently, a certain David Ozoemenam was arrested in the Iyana-Iba area of Lagos by operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team for producing an adulterated gin with the brand name ‘Stock’.
The product, ‘Stock Gin & Brandy’ which has been in circulation in the market for a while was subsequently deemed fake by the Nigeria Police.
Upon further inquiry into the arrest, Safety Record gathered that the product, in fact, purportedly a had registration number from National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control ( NAFDAC).
However, the police stated that this NAFDAC number was in no way authentic but a mere fabrication.
This shocking revelation led to a pertinent question: How could a product like this, with a fake NAFDAC number, be spotted by the consumers?
As Ozoemenam revealed to the police during interrogation: “Customers don’t know the difference between a genuine and fake NAFDAC number; they feel it is a waste of time to check it”.
One can hardly fault his submission because, truly, many people care less about what is inscribed on the packaging of the beverages they consume.
Another angle to look at things is whether or not consumers even know how to go about authenticating the products they consume. While many don’t even know if the products have or do not have NAFDAC registration numbers, the bulk of those that take the time to check for the NAFDAC number is content when they see any number written boldly on the product.
It is therefore important to know that simply spotting a NAFDAC number on a product is not just enough. The number spotted needs to be verified.
According to the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), there is a sure way to know this and this is broken down into these steps:
- Visit the website: nafdacverify.com.ng
- Once in the web domain, you will see, on the right corner, a bold inscription ‘NAFDAC Number Verification’, under which you will see a blank space.
- On that blank space, you are to type in the NAFDAC number of the product in question.
- Next, you will click on the ‘Verify Product’ icon below and wait.
- Finally, information regarding the authenticity of the product will be generated.
This procedure might seem tedious to the average man who is not yet truly safety conscious, but wouldn’t you rather prefer stress to death or health complications? A few minutes of crosschecking before consuming will certainly spare the consumer health hazards and hospital bills that are sure to follow if the above steps are ignored.
Safety must become a culture especially in these dire economic times when desperate people are ready to make money at the expense of the lives of millions of Nigerian consumers.
It is important to verify the NAFDAC registration number of any product before consuming it. A stitch in time, they say, saves nine.
