Five houses have collapsed in Auchi, Etsako-West Local Area of Edo State after heavy rain caused severe gully erosion.
Several houses were also said to be on the verge of collapse in Ekhei and Water Board, described as the worst-hit areas.
Gully erosion is a major challenge confronting Auchi, despite the Edo State Government partnering the World Bank in 2013 to reclaim major gully sites in the area.
Mr. Sunday Umoru, a resident who spoke to the media, called on the state government to urgently wade in to combat the situation which he said was posing a grave danger to lives and property.
“Many members of the community may soon lose their sources of livelihood, if the situation is allowed to deteriorate.
“We are calling on the state government to come to our aid, as our community is being threatened by gully erosion,’’ he said.
