A fuel tanker explosion has left 60 persons dead and 70 more injured in Tanzania.
The accident occurred in Morogoro, 200 kilometres west of the country’s capital, Dar es Salaam.
Regional police chief Willbrod Mtafungwa told journalists that majority of the victims were scooping fuel from an overturned tanker when a “big blast” occurred.
He added that many commercial motorcycle riders were among the victims.
An eyewitness, Daniel Ngogo said, “The situation is really bad. Many people died here, even those who were not stealing fuel because this is a busy place.”
Safety Record recalls that 58 lives were lost in Benue State in July 2019 when an overturned tanker exploded.
Majority of the victims were said to be scooping fuel from the scene before the explosion.
