The General Manager, Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), Mr Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, has advised fun seekers and other waterways users to maintain strict adherence to safety rules to prevent accidents on the waterways during the upcoming festivities.
He stated this in Lagos on Friday as residents prepare for the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
The LASWA boss said it was necessary for waterways users to exhibit safety consciousness as more people were expected to use the waterways during the celebrations.
Emmanuel said over speeding, overloading and alcohol intake while onboard a boat was tantamount to inviting disaster.
The general manager said, “We know that more people will use the waterways during the Sallah celebrations but we urge them to be safety conscious.
“All fun seekers, boat passengers, captains, deckhands and waterways users must be safety conscious and adhere strictly to the safety rules of the waterways at all times.
“They must not engage in over speeding, overloading or drinking alcohol while onboard a boat and more importantly, they must wear life jackets while no one should sail at night for whatever reason.
“LASWA felicitates with Muslims in the country and indeed, all over the world, particularly waterways users in Lagos on the occasion of Eid-El-Kabir and wishes them hitch-free celebrations.”
Emmanuel added that the agency’s patrol boats would be on standby to monitor compliance.
