The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service has said it made a mistake in its report of a fire incident at Amigo Supermarket, Wuse 2, Abuja on July 9.
The Public Relations Officer of the service, Timveh Jeremiah, had told the media that some sections of the supermarket were affected by a fire incident that was later put out by personnel of the service.
But in a follow-up statement on Friday, July 19, the FCT Fire Service spokesman said that the fire incident occurred at nearby H-MEDIX Store and not Amigo Supermarket.
“The information given to the public indicated that Amigo supermarket was the outfit hit by the fire. That was indeed what we told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), and other media houses,” Jeremiah said.
“To set the records straight, we wish to stress that the unfortunate fire outbreak occurred at H-MEDIX, and not Amigo supermarket, as reported.
“We wish to tender our apology to Amigo supermarket and NAN, whose credibility might have been affected by the publication, and the public, for the misinformation,’’ he added.
Safety Record had reported the fire as occurring at Amigo Supermarket based on Jeremiah’s first statement covered by NAN.
