A Sunday morning fire has damaged a 150MVA transformer belonging to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and located at the 330/132/33KVA substation along Sapele Road, Benin in Edo State.
According to a witness, Mr Osaigbovo Ikponmwosa, the fire started following an explosion in the transformer at 8am.
“We have been here since the fire started and the state fire service is not here to help curtail the spread of the fire,” the News Agency of Nigeria quoted him as saying.
A staff of TCN who pleaded anonymity confirmed the incident to NAN but said that the cause was not known.
Ikponmwosa blamed TCN substation in Edo for not having its own fire fighting equipment despite controlling more than two states.
He said that delay in combating the fire, due to lack of in-house fire fighting equipment, exacerbated the incident.
However, the fire was eventually put out at 11.30am following intervention of fire fighters from Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPH) fire station.
Fire fighters from the Nigerian Army, Air Force, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) and Delta State Fire Service also joined the effort to put out the fire.
TCN has yet to react to the fire incident.
