President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered thorough investigation into a gas pipeline incident that left some workers dead in Kom Kom community, Oyibo local government area of Rivers State.

The Rivers State Police Command confirmed that there was an explosion from the pipeline belonging to Pipeline and Product Marketing Company (PPMC) on Saturday, June 22.

“Some engineers were carrying out repairs (works) at a portion of the line. It appeared that there were spills and some residents tried to scoop the oil which led to the explosion.

“The actual number of the dead is not known but there were casualties,” Nnamdi Omoni, the command’s spokesman, said.

But in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, the president said he was “extremely pained by the loss of lives as a result of the incident”.

The president condoled with survivors and families of the “several fatalities” recorded and ordered an investigation.

Reports say that no fewer than 10 fatalities were recorded in the incident at the pipeline, which supplies petroleum products to Aba and Enugu.
