The National Industrial Safety Council of Nigeria (NISCN) has set plans in motion for a Nationwide Safety and Health Advisory Campaign.
This much was disclosed by the top hierarchy of NISCN through the council’s WhatsApp group.
NISCN President, Mr. Cletus Akhigbe, when approached by Safety Record, explained that modalities were being finalised to ensure that the “global” campaign goes according to plan.
The body explained that the purpose of the campaign was to spread the “gospel” of safety in Nigeria in light of the high rate of accidents and incidents which the body described as “avoidable”.
Explaining the rationale for the campaign, the Chairman, Edo State chapter of NISCN, Mr. Akhibi Obehi, said, “It is because safety in Nigeria is in a very poor state. There is need for awareness.
“Most times they will tell you it is expensive to run training about health and safety, but I think that the level we are right now, we don’t need to monetise anything.
“Let us throw it open, so that churches, banks, everybody, will have an open view where they can invite us (safety professionals) to come and have a safety and health advisory discussion as regards their own jobs and duties.”
“It will expose them to the normal routine we have regarding safety and health. When they are exposed and aware, it will leave them with no choice but to adhere,” he added when stressing on the importance of the upcoming campaign.
