The Kaduna State Fire Service says that 22 fatalities were recorded in fire incidents in the state between January and April.
The Director of the service, Mr Paul Aboi, made this known in Kaduna on Tuesday, May 21.
He disclosed that 267 fire incidents occurred within the period under review.
According to him, the service rescued 64 persons while 22 persons however lost their lives in the various incidents.
Aboi said that while Kaduna metropolis recorded the highest incidents with 115, Zaria recorded 86 cases and Kafanchan recorded 66 cases.
The director said that January led with 74 outbreaks, February 65, March 67 and April 61.
“The efforts of the Kaduna State Fire Service saved the state over N9 billion worth of goods and property from over 267 fire outbreaks in the state between January and April.
“The properties destroyed were estimated at N3 billion while the department was able to save properties worth over N9 billion,” the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted him as saying.
Also, he said that the service under his leadership would continue to work to drastically reduce fire incidence in the state.
Aboi disclosed that the service would keep on sensitising residents on fire safety measures in a bid to reduce the menace of fire disasters.
He stressed that investigations showed that most of the fire incidents occurred as a result of negligence and improper installation of electrical appliances.
Aboi therefore advised residents of the state to exercise caution with their electrical appliances and always disconnect them from power sources when not in use.
