Heritage Energy Operational Services Limited has confirmed a fire outbreak at a spill site along its Trans Forcados Pipeline within the Chanomi Creeks in Yeye community of Burutu Local Government Area of Delta.

The company confirmed the fire incident in a Monday, May 20 statement signed by its General Manager Community Relations, Mr Sylvester Okoh.

Okoh said that the fire started at 11.00pm on Sunday, May 19.

“It was gathered that the fire occurred due to excessive heat from a pumping machine which was being used to transfer crude oil from the spill site into a barge,” the statement read in part.

“The fire was reported to have destroyed some equipment at the scene. The houseboat and gunboats were safely relocated from the scene of the fire incident.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted Chairman of Yeye Community, Mr Phillip Fianka, as saying that there was a severe fire outbreak in the pipeline in the community.

Sources say that fears were rife that the fire could spread to other parts of the community if not put off immediately.

Safety Record recalls that Chevron Nigeria Limited’s Ojumole oil well in Ilaje Local Government in Ondo State also erupted in flames on April 18.
