The Minister of State for Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika has hailed the Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi-led Enugu State Government for taking urgent steps to improve safety at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport.
He gave the commendation in Lagos on Saturday.
Recall that Sirika had on May 17 announced that the Federal Government might downgrade the airport from handling international operations because of issues relating to the runway of the airport.
But the minister noted that the Enugu State Executive Council has immediately taken measures to address the aviation ministry’s concerns about the airport.
Sirika said, “We are appreciative that in the name of safety, the Enugu State Executive Council approved the immediate closure of Orie Emene Market, including the abattoir, to forestall any tragedy at the airport.
“We are also happy that the council also ordered immediate removal of all illegal structures encroaching on the land of the airport, including the radio mast of the state broadcasting service and the free trade zone.”
However, he called for the immediate execution of the approved measures, adding that doing so would enable the ministry carry out necessary repairs, expand the runway and address other safety and security-related issues at the airport.
