Property worth N338 million were lost to fire accidents in the first quarter of 2019 in Gombe, the state’s fire service has said.
The Deputy Operation Officer of the service, Malam Salihu Mahmoud, stated this in a Thursday, April 4 interview.
He disclosed that 426 lives were saved during the period.
According to Mahmoud, 107 incident calls were received in the period under review, with 23 persons sustaining various degrees of injuries but no fatality.
He said that the state fire service’s capabilities to manage fire incidents have improved as a result of ongoing reforms and re-training of personnel.
He further attributed the service’s success to wide acceptance of sensitisation programmes being executed across the state.
Mahmoud said that the sensitisation programmes have helped to equip residents with the right information to forestall outbreak of fire.
He advised residents to habitually check and repair faulty electrical appliances and switch them off when not in use.
While expressing the service’s appreciation to the state government for employing more personnel, he appealed to the government to provide necessary equipment to enable the service improve in its first quarter performance in the remainder of 2019.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, quoted fire officials, Gombe State recorded seven fatalities and loss of property worth N88 million between January and September 2018.
