The President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Executive Council (FEC) has ratified the Safe Schools Declaration.
According to Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, the declaration was ratified during the council’s weekly meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Wednesday, March 20.
The Safe Schools Declaration is an inter-governmental political commitment that provides countries the opportunity to express support for protecting education from attack during times of armed conflict; the importance of the continuation of education during war; and the implementation of concrete measures to deter the military use of schools.
The Declaration was opened for endorsement at the Oslo Conference on Safe Schools in May 2015.
Adamu said that while several activities had been carried out on the initiative, Nigeria would now actively implement the Safe School guideline.
He said, “The Safe School initiative will come in proper focus when there is some conflict and the Federal Government will come to their aid but they themselves are doing what they are supposed to do in all the places where they are affected by the conflict.”
