Ambode Inaugurates Neighbourhood Corps to Ensure Safety

In a bid to ensure a safe and secure Lagos State, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has launched the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) with a guarantee that the safety and security of lives in the state will be more enhanced.

Speaking at the official launching of the Corps held at Agege Stadium on March 27, the governor said that it was a giant move to ensuring safety in the state stressing that the safety of Lagos “is now non-negotiable.”

According to him, the Corps official was not in competition with the police; however they were to assist the police in the provision of information, facilitating arrest and penetrating inner areas of local councils.

“These officials have been trained on how to seek peaceful resolution of conflicts, proactive policing engagement as against reactive policing, dispute mediation, skilful negotiations and other skills that would assist in curbing crime and nipping in the bud of activities of criminally-minded individuals.”

Ambode, who on August 15 last year assented to the law that created the Neighbourhood Safety Corps, said the Corps had been designed to provide a second layer of policing in order to ensure that the state and communities are more secured.

The governor urged the 5,700 neighbourhood corps officials recruited to be civil in their approach and make safety of communities their watchword.

He further charged them not to be brutal in their approach but rather be a friendly law enforcement team that will earn the trust of every citizen.

According to him, “Special hotlines have also been created direct to the Executive Secretary (Mr. Adegboyega Bajulaiye) and senior management of the Neighbourhood Safety Corps Agency for easy communication with our communities in the event of any crime.”

Given the hotlines as 08140000825 and 07017222480, Ambode called on residents to cooperate the Corps adding that rewards would be given to residents who provided valuable information to the corps.

Some of the equipments given to the corps officials include 171 saloon cars, 377 motorcycles, 4000 bicycles and related accessories.

Reacting, a community leader in Lagos, Chief Shola Ogunyonbo, said that no security agency can be as effective as that of the Neighbour corps because of its closeness to the grass roots.

“We have different kinds of security checks but you cannot compare them with community security. These ones are very close to the community.

“These are the people who are living with their people. If there is any crime in the community, it will very easy for them to fish them out because they live within that community and they know the onions of the community. That is why it is very good.

“As the federal government doesn’t allow local government police, I think this one is very good to work with the community. Immediately they start their job, crime will reduce drastically in the Lagos state.

“If you talk of security, you are talking of safety too. So they are very good. When they secure the community very well, then the security will be guaranteed,” he said.
