There was a time in the world when children were loved, truly cared for, appreciated and thus considered as leaders of tomorrow; the child was well nurtured , protected, instructed and cherished to meet the task of leadership ahead.

Today, the child has nothing going for him. The child is helpless, lacks the necessary tutoring and where he gets, it is the wrong knowledge that the adults exhibit in the community; especially on our roads which end the child in an orthopedic center or early grave.

The record of The World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF shows 500 children die on world road daily; you will agree with me that the figure didn’t include the Nigerian child and if it does, it is no adequate considering our attitude and what we do to figures in this part of the globe. Should we accept the figure, it still didn’t attend to the injured, maimed, and hospitalized and so on.

The child doesn’t drive yet we expose him to the dangers on the road as a result of our poor driving skills and where the innocent child is not in the vehicle, our regard for the future which a child symbolizes is very much disheartening.

Every one of us owes the children consideration and respect for their existence; they are harmless and innocent and they constitute the greatest force for the next generation. They shouldn’t be exposed to traffic hazards and in any case wherewith they are seen on the road, they should be given the needed attention so that our attitude can be a great lesson for them.

As the World ponder on “Children and Road Safety” for the 3rd United Nation Road Safety Week this year , I urge we listen to the cry of the child and be of an example in deed; strap the child in the vehicle, any child below the age of twelve should not be allowed in the front seat ofvehicles, provide crash helmet if they must ride bicycles, give them right of wayat every zebra crossing, support installation of schools zones or children crossing signs and observe them, watch out for the children on the road; when you see them going astray on the road, spare them little of your time to call them to order, obey all traffic regulations; the child is watching and learning something, be it positive or negative.

To our Government and Organizations; support programs that inculcate the right behavior into the child, implement child friendly road furniture; when we protect the child, we are preserving a future for all of us. Let us think safety, don’t expose the child to road danger, the safety of the child is our collective responsibility, #safekidslive.
