Nine persons sustained various degrees of injuries after a market wall in Urua Edet-Obo, Ikot Akpatek, Onna LGA of Akwa Ibom collapsed on Monday, December 19.
The latest incident is coming after a December 10 church building collapse in the state capital, Uyo left no fewer than 32 dead and many more others injured.
The State Commissioner of Police, Muritala Mani initially told reporters that two women died in the incident but reversed himself later in a statement through the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Cordelia Nwawe.
Addressing journalists at the Police Headquarters in Uyo, Nwawe said, “There is no documented evidence to prove that two persons died but nine persons were injured with four of them in critical condition. Discreet investigation has showed that nobody died.
“The police have no authority to certify people dead, only medical personnel do such. Evacuation is complete and the nine have been transferred to the Ibom Specialist Hospital.
“Four of them with severe injuries will undergo surgeries today at the same hospital while the other five are responding to treatment.
“We have to emphasise here that the injured were moved to the Ibom Specialist Hospital because of the presence of sophisticated equipment at the hospital.”
The Punch reported that some sections of the 60-year-old market were renovated three years ago by government.
