The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has vowed to ensure that the Federal Fire Service (FFS) attains the status of the best in the world through adequate funding and support.
He declared this in Abuja on Friday when he visited the FFS headquarters as part of familiarisation tour of departments and agencies under the ministry.
Aregbesola said that while reports of the FFS’s many challenges is no longer news, those challenges would become a thing of the past under his tenure as minister.
“I am aware releases are not adequate and you already have some committed expenditure you cannot fund.
“We will ensure we get you to the operations of the best fire service in the world,” the minister said.
The Minister noted that the 12 newly-acquired firefighting trucks had not been delivered to the FFS because drivers and operators of the vehicles were currently undergoing training.
Safety Record can report that two vehicles will be allocated to each of the 6 newly established zonal fire service stations namely: Minna, Sokoto, Yola, Owerri, Asaba, and Osogbo.
“By Sunday, 25th August, 2019, these vehicles will be moved to various zones across the country,” he said.
However, he reminded the FFS to always place a premium on the safety of lives and properties.
He advised the service to always be proactive in responding to situations rather than reactive.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Federal Fire Service had appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari for N9.20 billion special intervention funds to ensure delivery of 32 firefighting trucks and other equipment.
The request is still pending.
