The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has instituted a committee to investigate the recent fire accident that rocked the Uwelu Motor Spare Parts market in Benin, the state capital recently.
The governor said this on Wednesday during an inspection of the destruction wrecked by the fire incident which happened on Monday.
“I will hold a meeting with the head of the Edo Fire Service and other agencies, which helped to put out the fire, members of the state executive council and members of the local government Council where the market is located this afternoon.
“A team will be set up to investigate the fire outbreak,” Obaseki said.
Obaseki assured the traders that his government will not relent until the true cause of the fire was discovered with a view to curbing future incidents.
He explained that the newly-instituted committee had been mandated to carry out all necessary investigations as regards the incident and as such were given a week to complete that task.
“The team will also advise the state government on measures to put in place to prevent fire outbreaks in markets and when there is an outbreak it doesn’t get to such magnitude,” he said.
The Chairman, Motor Spare Parts Association, Uwelu Market, Mr. Augustine Osaretin, thanked the governor for the gesture.
It will be recalled that properties worth millions of naira were lost to the fire.
