The Bauchi Fire Service Directorate, on Wednesday, released its statistics report for June 2018 – June 2019, indicating that two persons died from fire incidents in the period under review.
The report showed that a fatality each was recorded in October 2018 and April 2019, while a total of 147 persons were rescued from fire incidents in the state during the one-year period.
Properties worth N948,025,000 were said to be lost within the time frame while properties worth N1, 944, 050, 000 were saved by the fire service.
According to the report, March 2019 featured the highest loss of properties with N262 million.
The report further revealed that residential homes, workshops, shops, hotels, petrol filling stations, vehicles and markets were places affected by fire outbreaks.
Abubabakar Bala, the Public Relations Officer, Bauchi State Fire Service said that the service received 423 distress calls from the state’s residents within the period.
He pointed at unchecked bush burning, electrical faults and overloading of electrical appliances as the leading causes of fire in the state.
“I advise them to always use quality electrical wires for all their wiring.
“They should stop buying these substandard wires which can easily cause fire,” he said.
Bala called on the government to better equip the state fire service, noting that the service currently has limited fire-fighting equipment to combat fire disasters in the state.
