The Federal Ministry of Transportation and stakeholders in the aviation sector are calling for Air Traffic Safety Electronics Personnel (ATSEP) to be licensed in order to maintain safety in the country’s airspace.
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Transportation, Sabiu Zakari, made the call while speaking at the opening ceremony of the 9th Africa Regional Meeting of the International Federation of Air Traffic Safety Electronics Association held on Tuesday in Abuja.
He said that member states have already put plans in motion to actualise the licensing.
Capt Fola Akinkuotu, the Managing Director, Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), stated that for safety to be ensured in the region, the ATSEP, not only needed to be licensed, but also recognised.
“The need to license them must be brought to the front burner; the licence does not do the job but gives them more commitment,” Akinkuotu said.
Also speaking at the event, Capt. Abdulsalam Mohammed, the Rector, Nigerian College of Aviation Technology Zaria, informed the public of its ATSEP training aimed at broadening the knowledge and scope of aviation personnel.
