Kogi drainage clearance exercise

The Kogi State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Sanusi Yahaya, has warned residents of the state against blocking water channels by dumping waste materials and refuse.

Yahaya, while speaking in the state capital, Lokoja, on Saturday said that such acts were the leading cause of flooding in the state.

He said the ministry was presently overseeing the reconstruction of drainage in the state by the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP).

The commissioner led a team to Ganaja Junction to Dunamis Church Junction project, Second 200 Housing Estate, SUBEB of Children Amusement park areas, and other areas where drainages were being reconstructed.

Yahaya applauded the efforts of NEWMAP saying the reconstruction was going at a speedy rate.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Mrs Hannah Odiyo, also praised the efforts of NEWMAP for doing a commendable job in averting flooding in the state.

Residents in the state were also advised to appropriately dispose off their waste to curb the menace of flooding.
