The Gombe State Fire Service says a total of 12 fatalities and N636 million worth of properties were lost to fire incidents in the state between January and June 2019.
This service disclosed this in its first bi-annual 2019 report made available to newsmen by Mr Salihu Doho, its Deputy Operations Officer, on Tuesday.
Doho blamed electrical faults for many of the fire incidents recorded in the state during the said period.
He said that the service received a total of 147 incident calls in the time frame, with 46 injuries recorded.
According to him, a total of 491 lives were saved by the service in the period under review.
“It has almost become a norm that fire outbreaks must be triggered by one electrical fault or the other.
“We have been carrying out sensitisation in that regard and we will not relent until Gombe State records low fire outbreaks on a yearly basis. Fire wrecks serious havoc in homes, markets and anywhere.
“This is the more reason people should be more cautious when dealing with activities that can cause outbreak. In 2018, within the same period, we recorded less than 136 emergency calls as against the 147 this year,’’ he said.
He thus admonished residents of the state to take precautions when handling electrical appliances in order to curb future fire incidents.
