A sachet water producer, Shodipo Olujimi, has been handed a one year prison sentence by an Osogbo Magistrate Court for forging laboratory results.
Prosecutors said that Olujimi, on July 24, 2018 forged a laboratory result and presented same to the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) in order to obtain quality approval for his sachet water factory, ‘Genesis Water’ based in Ile-Ife.
A two-count charge of forgery was instituted against him on May 22, 2018, the second of which bordered on forging a N25,000 bank deposit teller which he presented to SON as payment for sanction applied after he failed to submit genuine laboratory test report.
The prosecution counsel, Mr Olofindare Adeleke, while addressing the court, said that the defendant forged the bank teller with number 211681.
The prosecution counsel explained that the teller was confirmed to be a fake by Zenith Bank.
However, the defence counsel, Mr R. A. Ugwu, pleaded leniency for his client, who had pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge.
Magistrate Modupe Awodele, while delivering her judgment, lamented the health issues that must have arisen from people buying the defendant’s substandard water.
Her verdict read: “The convict should have pleaded for forgiveness and not mercy. He is wicked and did not deserve mercy.
“It is a presumption in law that anyone who is in a possession of a forged document is a forger.
“I hereby sentence the accused to six months in prison on count one and six months on count two.
“The sentences are to run concurrently.”
The sachet water factory was banned for two years.
