Florijana Ismaili, the female footballer who was earlier reported missing in a swimming accident, has now been confirmed dead on Wednesday.
The BSC Young Boys player was holidaying at Lake Como, 16 miles from the Switzerland border, when the incident occurred.
Earlier information obtained from the footballer’s friend state that while the two rented a boat, the 24-year-old footballer elected to dive into the water for a quick swim but never showed up afterwards.
A three-day search had proved abortive despite swimmers diving up to 50 metres below the surface.
The player’s remains were however found when an autonomous underwater vehicle which could go 200 metres below was deployed.
Tributes have since been flowing in for the late player, most notably from Liverpool FC star, Xherdan Shaqiri, who took to twitter to express his shock at the sad event.
“I am deeply shocked by the death of Florijana Ismaili. My family and I would like to express our condolences to the Ismaili family and those close to them,” Shaqiri wrote.
