The Federal Ministry of Health says that the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has been given the backing by the Federal Government to vigorously inspect and regulate processed foods in line with its mandate.
The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr Abdullahi Mashi, disclosed this during a news briefing to commemorate the inaugural World Food Safety Day in Abuja.
He said foods from animal origin could possess viruses and bacteria because of the unsafe handling of these foods.
He further revealed that unsafe foods have resulted in $95 billion in production losses annually in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC).
While revealing the theme for this year’s 2019 World Food Safety Day as ‘Food Safety, Everyone’s Business’, he stressed the importance of only safe and wholesome foods.
Without it, he said, people will always end up in hospitals for varied symptoms, be it vomiting or fever, all of which are obtainable if unwholesome foods are consumed.
