The Sector Commander, Kwara State Command, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Uchechukwu Wihioka, has called for proper implementation of legislation to aid safety on Nigerian roads.
He made the call at an event to commemorate the 5th United Nations Global Road Safety Week tagged ‘Leadership for Road Safety’.
At the event which held on Saturday in Ilorin, Wihioka noted that road safety was the business of every well-meaning Nigerian.
He also called on Nigerian leaders to make a case for safety on Nigerian roads to help reduce high rate of crashes.
The sector commander said, ”Safety is paramount in everything and everybody must speak up. Leaders must enact special laws to prevent consistent road crashes.
”Young and innocent Nigerians are dying everyday on the roads, it is time for our leaders to be like you, Journalists, Teachers, Religious leaders, Lawyers, Drivers and Artisans to speak out in one voice to protect souls.
”An occupant of a vehicle has a right to caution drivers while driving recklessly. Don’t keep mute when someone endangers your life.”
In light of the theme of the week, Wihioka argued that without strict adherence to traffic rules and regulation, safety on the roads could never be achieved.
“Safety is everybody’s responsibility and not government’s alone. Let’s join hands and be a road safety campaigner,” the commander said.
He lamented that 1.35 million people lose their lives to road clashes globally every year, saying that the figure called for special attention to be paid to safety on the road.
