The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says 36 fatalities were recorded from road traffic crashes in Edo, Delta, Anambra States between January and March 2019.
The corps said 34 fatalities were recorded in the three states within the same period in 2018.
The three states make up Zone 5 of the FRSC headquartered in Benin.
The Zonal Commanding Officer (ZCO), Mr Kehinde Adeleye made the disclosure during the second Quarter Zonal retreat for commanding officers, zonal heads of departments and units in the zone, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported.
He disclosed that the 36 fatalities were recorded in 57 road crashes involving 170 persons.
Adeleye further disclosed that within the same period in 2018, 34 fatalities were recorded in 47 road crashes involving 173 persons.
He noted that the retreat was organised as a capacity building programme for commanding officers and unit heads with the aim of reducing road traffic crashes within the zone.
He said, “It has been observed that there has been an increase in RTCs, as well as fatalities in the first quarter.
“It is also necessary for FRSC officials to put heads together and come up with new initiatives to ensure that the major goals and objectives of the ‘Decade of Action on Road Safety’ are achieved.’’
