The Sokoto State Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Muhammad Kaigama Kabo, has called on lawmakers to pass laws to checkmate the nefarious activities of some motorcycle riders in the state.
The sector commander made the call during an event to mark the United Nations Global Road Safety Week and West Africa Road Safety Organisation Day.
Kabo disclosed that many motorcycles riders in Sokoto were from neighbouring states and had failed to register with the motorcycle association in the state.
Consequently, he said, some of such cyclists engaged in criminal activities and apprehending them had become difficult.
The sector commander said, “Our investigations revealed that majority of them are from the neighbouring states and are not dully registered with the mother Association in the state.
”They are operating independently without any checks and some of them are involved in criminal activities like banditry and kidnappings.”
While also hailing the ban placed by the Nigerian army on motorcycle riders in bandit-infested areas in the North, Kabo stated that a huge percentage of road crashes in the Sokoto metropolis were caused by these riders.
