At this year’s International Firefighters’ Day tagged ‘Geared Up For Fire: The Role of Firefighter in Today’s Society’, the Anambra State Fire Service promised greater commitment in combating fire incidents in the state.
The day which is usually marked on every 4th of May saw the Fire service recognize the works of some of its firefighters who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
One of such firefighters was Mr. Maxwell Afujue who died in a building collapse while trying to rescue victims at the Ochanja Market, Onitsha, in December 2015.
Another was Mr. Ishmael Ughasoro who was a former director of the Anambra State Fire Service.
The Director of the Anambra State Fire Service, Engineer Martin Agbili, saluted the Governor of the state, Willie Obiano, for his contributions to the service but also called on the government to do more in terms of procuring equipment; staff remuneration; and training.
The Fire Chief reminded men of the service that they owed a duty to humanity while asking for diligence and steadfastness in their daily fight against their number one enemy– fire.
