The Acting General Manager of Osun Waste Management Agency (OWMA), Mr Femi Ogunbamiwo, on Tuesday announced that 60 persons have been arrested and prosecuted for dumping refuse indiscriminately in Osogbo, the state capital.
According to him, the suspects who were arrested in Igbona, Osogbo for flouting the state’s environmental laws, were handed fines ranging from N5,000- N15,000.
Ogunbamiwo disclosed that some others who were arrested in the raid which took place between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m were made to do community service as a substitute for the fines.
He said, “The operation was carried out early this morning between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m.
“As I speak to you, our officers are still going round the town to make more arrests.
“The environment law stipulates that refuse can only be disposed at designated areas and whoever dumps refuse or waste anywhere apart from the designated areas, has violated the state environmental law.”
