The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has assured members of the university community and other stakeholders of the safety of water from its Opa dam.

According to a Monday statement from the institution’s Registrar, Mrs. M.I. Omosule, suspected land grabbers polluted the dam with chemicals, leading to the death of several fishes and other aquatic animals.

She disclosed that the “university was lucky that the pollution was at the lower level of the dam.

“This notwithstanding and considering the enormity and public health implications of the action, a thorough assessment of the situation was immediately undertaken.

“The pumping of water was only resumed after necessary and satisfactory steps had been taken to confirm and ensure the safety of the discharge from our water-works.”

The registrar enjoined members of the university community to go about their normal activities without any fear of poisoning, molestation or attack as the matter had been reported to the police and other law enforcement agencies.
